Before I trained as a counsellor, I worked as a manager for numerous years. My interest in counselling was a gradual process, and was brought on through my own personal life experiences and a desire that I have always had to work with people in a helpful way. Working as a counsellor has allowed me to work in a way that fits with who I am as a person. I love my work as a counsellor and I genuinely feel it has enriched me as a person.
I hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling, (Strathclyde University). Previous to this I obtained the COSCA Certificate in Counselling skills (Cardonald College). I also hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling Children and Young People (Edinburgh University). I completed an extensive Play Therapy Course (Strathclyde University) which has ehnanced my work with Children and Young People.
I firmly believe in Personal and Professional Development and attend courses which I feel will be of benefit to me both personally and professionally.
I have detailed below some of the areas I have covered in my continuous training:
Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Children's Emotional well-being
Mental Health First Aid
Person-Centred Couple and Family Therapy
Suicide Prevention and first Aid.
In my past experience I worked for a large voluntary organisation counselling provider. During this time I had the opportunity to provide counselling to clients of a varied age, gender and with a diverse range of issues. I also worked for 2 years in a youth project in Glasgow, providing counselling to Children and Young People within both the Primary and Secondary School setting. For the past 3 years I have been working in Private Practice and I also work Part-time for a Mental Health project, providing counselling to Young People in 2 Secondary Schools, and Part-time for a University, providing Play Therapy within a Primary School setting. Working with both Adults, Young People and Children has allowed me to work in a more creative way and with a deeper understanding, as many times Adults come to counselling with issues that started during their own childhood.
There are particular areas where I feel that I have additional experience and a very specific interest. These include, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Loss and Change, Depression, Carer's Issues and M.E.
I am an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP), and I practice within their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am a UKRCP Independent Registered Counsellor, and I am a member of Person-Centred Therapy Scotland ,(PCT Scotland), I also hold an up-to-date enhanced disclosure.
